Dental Bridges in Elmwood Park, IL

A Natural Look & Feel

A dental bridge is a type of dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. It consists of an artificial tooth or teeth, called pontics, that are held in place by dental crowns on the adjacent teeth, known as abutments. The dental crowns are placed over the natural teeth on either side of the gap left by the missing tooth, and the pontic(s) fill in the space, effectively “bridging” the gap.

Dental bridges can be made from various materials, including porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or metal alloys. The choice of material depends on factors such as the location of the bridge in the mouth, aesthetic preferences, and the dentist’s recommendation.

To create a dental bridge, the adjacent teeth are usually prepared by removing a portion of the enamel to accommodate the dental crowns. Then, an impression of the teeth is taken to create a custom-fit bridge in a dental laboratory. In the meantime, a temporary bridge may be placed to protect the prepared teeth.

Once the permanent bridge is ready, it is cemented onto the prepared teeth, restoring the appearance, function, and alignment of the patient’s smile. Dental bridges can help improve chewing and speaking abilities, prevent surrounding teeth from shifting, and enhance the overall aesthetics of the mouth.
