Implants
Dental implants are a type of dental restoration used to replace missing teeth. They are considered a long-term solution and provide a stable foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth.
A dental implant consists of three main components:
Implant Fixture: This is a small, screw-shaped titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone. Titanium is used because it is biocompatible, meaning it can fuse with the bone through a process called osseointegration. The implant fixture serves as the root of the missing tooth.
Abutment: After the implant fixture has integrated with the jawbone, an abutment is attached to it. The abutment is a connector piece that protrudes above the gum line. It provides support and holds the replacement tooth or crown in place.
Crown or Prosthesis: The crown is the visible part of the dental implant that resembles a natural tooth. It is custom-made to match the shape, size, and color of your existing teeth, ensuring a seamless integration with your smile. The crown is typically made of porcelain or a combination of porcelain and metal.
The process of getting a dental implant usually involves several steps and may require multiple visits to the dentist or an oral surgeon. It begins with a thorough examination of your oral health and the planning of the implant placement. In some cases, bone grafting may be necessary to ensure there is enough bone to support the implant. After the implant is placed, there is a healing period during which osseointegration takes place. Finally, the abutment and crown are attached to complete the restoration.
Dental implants offer numerous benefits, including improved appearance, enhanced chewing and speech functionality, increased comfort compared to traditional dentures, and long-term durability.
